Professional Development

The PDU is the Staff Development Unit of the Ministry. Its main responsibility is to coordinate and/or manage in-service training of all categories of personnel employed in the Ministry.

Target Groups

The unit provides relevant staff development experiences for the following groups:

• Senior Managers and Education Officers
• Principals
• Teachers
• Administrative Personnel including Secretarial, Clerical and Ancillary

Aims of PDU

The PDU aims to:

• Improve the quality of the education product through the provision of necessary, appropriate and effective staff development experiences to those included in its mandate
• Develop relationships with other training institutions and agencies to enable its Officers to be abreast of current trends and practices in the training and development of staff
• Develop and maintain a core of resource personnel in the education system which will facilitate the smooth exchange of ideas, delegations of responsibility and implementation of necessary changes

Functions

The unit carries out the following functions:

• Identifies and analyses needs and evaluates results
• Designs and develops training programmes
• Delivers training and development programmes and services
• Advises and counsels on training and development
• Maintains organizational relationships.

The Unit identifies training needs through:

• On-site observations
• Consultations with stakeholders
• Surveys
• Appraisals and evaluations
• Discussions
• Voluntary feedback

Responsiveness

The unit responds at all times to requests for the provision of training and staff development from any sector for which it has responsibility

Networking / Linkages

The PDU has the special privilege of being allowed to bring together diverse talents, skills and special aptitudes from any source to enrich staff Development activities.

Strong links are maintained with all the units in the Ministry, key agencies and individuals as the PDU seeks to carry out its mandate to expose its clients to a variety of high quality in-service experiences.
